Jett Lawrence has won the AMA Pro Motocross Championship for 2021

In only his second complete season as a professional rider, Jett Lawrence has won the AMA Pro Motocross 250 Class championship.

In the last round of the season at Hangtown in California, the Australian rode his factory Honda CRF250R to an 8-3 finish, earning enough points to beat Yamaha’s Justin Cooper for the title.

Lawrence made things difficult for himself with a series of tough starts and a few untimely falls, but he recovered to win the Gary Jones Cup for the 250 Class Championship.

“Oh my goodness, it’s a good day in the end,” Lawrence said. “I think that’s the worst I’ve ridden in a while, but I still got the title. It feels so great, as we’ve been working quite a while to get this.”

The Queenslander finished 6 points clear of Cooper, while his older brother Hunter Lawrence took third place in the championship race.

The Lawrence brothers are two of the most promising prospects in American motocross, hailing from Landsborough, Queensland. At the start of the year, the pair signed a contract with the Honda HRC factory team, and Jett also signed a deal with Red Bull.

The Lawrence family has traveled a long road, having left Australia and relocated to Europe in order to advance the boys’ careers. Hunter came to popularity in the MX2 World Championship, while Jett competed in the European Motocross Championship.

Hunter then joined the world-famous Geico Honda squad in the United States. Jett followed soon after, but when the Geico team folded at the end of 2020, Honda decided to form a factory team in the 250 class, with the Lawrence twins as its star riders.

Both brothers had battled injuries and uneven form, but in 2021, they both made a big leap forward, competing for the AMA Supercross 250 West and East crowns, as well as placing first and third in the Pro Motocross 250 championship.

Since Chad Reed won the Pro Motocross 450 Class championship in 2009, Jett Lawrence is the first Australian to win a major motocross title in America.
