Hill outlines how Leclerc may improve from Perez’s experience

According to former Formula One racer Damon Hill, it is essential for Charles Leclerc to adjust his strategy following his failure at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Damon Hill feels Charles Leclerc should avoid making “rash movements,” citing Sergio Perez as an instance of how to approach a top team.

When he slid off at the Variante Alta, Leclerc was battling Perez for second place in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Even though his Ferrari collided with the obstacles, the Monegasque managed to pit and place sixth.

Hill acknowledges that one trait that distinguishes the best drivers from the rest is their slkill to manage in a “pressure situation,” and points to Leclerc’s mistake as an example of a bad decision.

“We’ve seen with Charles of course, Imola was an opportunity to consolidate,” Hill told the F1 Nation podcast.

“And he went for a move which was just a little bit too ambitious, and he called it greedy. I was watching sitting down. Literally, I almost grabbed my wife’s leg as as he turned in, [when] they showed it from the onboard.

“The moment he turned in, you knew it was too much. I’m not even in the car and I could see it on the telly. I was going, ‘That is not going to work.’ Boom, he spun off.”

Hill cautions Leclerc against making “ambitious” actions

Regarding his status as a World Championship challenger, Hill believes Leclerc may need to adjust his strategy.

Red Bull’s Perez, according to the veteran F1 driver, is one of the racers that understands the importance of not making excessively ambitious movements on the racetrack.

“[Leclerc] just thought, ‘I’ll launch it over the kerb,’ and it was just far too ambitious,” Hill explained.

“And you think, why do that when you’ve got so much responsibility? That’s the sort of thing that you need to weed out of your portfolio as a top driver. You can’t be doing rash moves like that.

“You look at Sergio. Sergio’s a safe pair of hands. He’s quick, and he’s a safe pair of hands. He hardly ever does anything crazy. He’s really good.”

Regarding the events of Imola, Leclerc ranked at the forefront of the Drivers’ rankings, but his advantage has been whittled away by Max Verstappen, who currently has a 27-point advantage.

Meanwhile, Perez is in third place, barely five points behind Verstappen.
