For engine allocation infractions at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, NASCAR has penalized the Hendrick Motorsports teams of reigning Cup champion Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman.
Elliott’s No. 9 team and Bowman’s No. 48 were both found to be in breach of an engine assembly rule.
According to a statement provided by Hendrick Motorsports on Thursday, the penalties were caused by an administrative error in which a sealed engine assigned to Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet was unintentionally allocated to the No. 48.
“We apologize for the mistake and have taken steps to ensure it will not be repeated,” the company said.
In both the driver and team owner standings, Competition officials deducted 25 points from each team’s total. Alan Gustafson, Elliott’s crew chief, and Greg Ives, Bowman’s crew chief, were each penalized $50,000.
Elliott falls from fifth to sixth in the Cup series standings as a result of the penalty. Bowman is still in 11th place in terms of points.
Hendrick Motorsports executive vice president and general manager Jeff Andrews, as well as the organization’s director of track engine support Scott Maxim, have been suspended by NASCAR until the next Cup race on August 8 at Watkins Glen.
