Hendrick Motorsports and Alex Bowman are getting closer to extending their contract

On Sunday, car owner Rick Hendrick described Dover winner Alex Bowman’s multi-year contract agreement as “just a formality.”

Bowman’s contract is up at the end of this season. Last year, he agreed to a one-year contract extension.

Asked to give an update on contract talks with Bowman, Hendrick said: “We’ve already started. It should be done any time. We want Alex there. He wants to be there. It’s kind of, at this point, just a formality.”

Hendrick confirmed it would be a multi-year deal.

“Just being at Hendrick Motorsports is obviously where I want to be,” Bowman said after the race. “I want to continue to work with (sponsor) ally and drive the 48 car. Like he said, we’ve been working on it. I think I want to be there, they want me to drive their race car.”

Bowman, who is 28 years old, began racing for Hendrick Motorsports in 2016. When Dale Earnhardt Jr. was out due to concussion symptoms, he drove in 10 races as a fill-in driver for him. Bowman spent the following season as a simulator driver for Hendrick Motorsports.

After Earnhardt retired in 2018, Bowman took over the No. 88 car. After Jimmie Johnson left the Cup Series last year to pursue an IndyCar ride, Bowman switched to the No. 48 this season.

Bowman’s second win of the season and fourth of his career came on Sunday. He is the only other multi-time Cup winner this season, joining Martin Truex Jr.

This year, both Truex and Denny Hamlin received contract extensions with Joe Gibbs Racing.

Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, and Matt DiBenedetto are among the drivers whose contracts will expire after this season.
