Despite the fact that both Red Bull cars started the Mexican Grand Prix from the second row, Helmut Marko believes Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have the speed to make up for a poor qualifying performance.
Red Bull’s double-podium performance in Mexico pleased Helmut Marko, who stated that the team “ran away from the rest” of the competition.
Max Verstappen won the race, extending his World Championship lead over Lewis Hamilton to 19 points, while Sergio Perez finished third for a historic result at home.
After missing to qualify on the first row, the team’s fortunes changed dramatically, but Marko maintains he was always confident in his ability to turn things around in the race.
“It didn’t look so good after qualifying, but we knew we had the speed,” Marko said after the race. “Max knew he had to brake much later at the first corner, and then he was very good in the race.
“Everything was under control. We managed to run away from the rest.”
Perez almost caught Hamilton
Hamilton came in second, but Perez made a late charge to make it a Red Bull 1-2.
On the final lap, the Mexican found himself within DRS range, and while he couldn’t find a way around, it didn’t dampen Marko’s spirits after the race.
He added: “Checo needed another lap, because Lewis’ tyres were already worn out.
“It was stressful with all these people on the radio talking about how the tyres were, [but] it was perfect.”
In the Constructors’ standings, Red Bull now trails Mercedes by by one point.
