Following a severe collision in the closing laps of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway last weekend, Denny Hamlin is still in pain.
During the 400-mile regular final season, Hamlin, 41, and Daniel Suarez were vying for the lead of the race when they unintentionally led the group into rainfall.
A significant track-clearing event was the outcome. Many motorists have reported that the new car’s hits this year are harsher than those from the previous generation. After his discharge from the infield care facility on Sunday, Hamlin reaffirmed his remarks.
He responded when questioned if anything specific was hurting: “No, just my whole body. My jaw hurts. I feel like my jaw is one of those boxers that gets their whole face demolished. It was certainly the first real big one I’ve had in this car and everything they’ve been telling us, all the other drivers, it’s legit. .
He had initially intended to compete in both the Southern 500, which kicks out the Cup Series playoffs, and the NASCAR Xfinity Series race this weekend. In both divisions at Darlington Raceway, Hamlin has won nine times.
Now that he is dealing with the aftereffects of last Sunday’s hit, he has made the decision to forgo the race on Saturday.
“I have had some soreness in my neck, back, and hips from the wreck on Sunday,” said Hamlin in a release from JGR. “I feel like the right thing for me to do is to sit out the Xfinity Series race and put 100 percent of my focus on getting ready for this weekend’s Cup Series playoff race.”
Teammate Christopher Bell will instead race the No. 18 Toyota Supra in the NXS competition. Hamlin continues to want to take part in the Cup race on Sunday.
