Hamilton’s opponents cautioned that he might be at his’most dangerous’ right now

Speaking about the seven-time World Champion’s defence, Mark Webber is the current ex-Formula One racer to share his perspective on Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ beginning to the 2022 season.

Hamiltons

People have indeed been “pretty harsh, pretty fast” on Lewis Hamilton thus far this year, according to Mark Webber, who believes that supporters should look past the performances.

After 4 rounds, Hamilton is 7th in the overall standings, three places and 21 points behind rookie driver George Russell.

Russell has completed every race in the top five spots, whereas Hamilton ended 10th in Saudi Arabia (after a Q1 exit) and failed to score last time out in Imola.

Webber defends Hamilton over early-season form

Despite the disparity in performance and standings, Webber, an eight-time Grand Prix winner, believes Hamilton did little wrong.

Safety Cars at Jeddah and Melbourne, the latter of which allowed Russell to get by, were cited by the Australian as primary indicators of when Hamilton lost out “through no fault of his own.”

“I think people are being pretty harsh, pretty fast on Lewis,” former Red Bull driver Webber was quoted by the Daily Mail.

“In Bahrain, he drove brilliantly to third place. In Saudi, there was a Safety Car involved there with a pit-stop. Same in Melbourne.

“I think there have been quite a few points he’s missed through no fault of his own. It’s only Imola where he had a tricky qualifying and race.

“Of course, everyone’s forgetting how the other points were lost through no fault of his own.”

Hamilton is a never-ending source of motivation

Mercedes has teased improvements for this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix, and Webber has urged other squads and racers not to underestimate the Silver Arrows and its seven-time World Champion.

“Never, ever underestimate an organisation like those guys,” added Webber.

“It’s going to be fascinating to see how the next few weeks go.

“Lewis is at his most dangerous with his back against the wall. He’s never short of motivation – that’s why he’s probably the greatest of all time.”

Webber also spoke highly of Russell, predicting that Hamilton will relish the challenge given by the rookie.

“George is driving brilliantly. Very, very good for him,” he said.

“It’s good to have the youngsters threatening the established drivers. That’s what it should be about. Lewis would never shy away from that.”
