Hamilton accepts defeat: “We couldn’t do anything”

Lewis Hamilton expressed his gratitude after finishing second in the Mexican Grand Prix. After the race, the Mercedes driver stated that he couldn’t keep up with Max Verstappen’s speed.

After crossing the line a distant second, Lewis Hamilton admits there was little Mercedes could do to prevent Red Bull’s Max Verstappen from winning the race in Mexico.

Verstappen took the lead at Turn 1 and never looked back, increasing his World Championship lead to 19 points.

By finishing second, Hamilton was able to limit the damage as much as possible, and he confessed after the race that Red Bull were simply too strong in Mexico.

“Firstly, congratulations to Max,” said Hamilton. “That car was far superior this weekend, and there’s nothing we could really do about it.

“I gave it absolutely everything, and [it was] obviously a great fight with Sergio [Perez] at the end, but I’m really grateful I was able to at least get second.”

Tense fight with Perez

Hamilton had to hold off Perez’s late charge for second place in front of his home crowd. Despite the fact that the gap dropped to less than a second at times, Hamilton claims it wasn’t difficult to keep him at away.

He added: “I’ve had that many times before, it was easy to hold on. It just shows how fast their car was.

“Sergio was close behind me, and he was able to follow closely. He did a great job, so he was applying that pressure, and he just kept going.”
