Goals for Sprint are set by Steiner for Magnussen and Schumacher

While teammate Mick Schumacher starts at the very back of the grid, Kevin Magnussen will take the lead for the Brazilian Grand Prix Sprint race. Guenther Steiner, the head of the Haas team, has discussed his goals for both competitors.

In the Brazilian Grand Prix Sprint race, Guenther Steiner has expressed his hopes for what Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher can accomplish from the opposite ends of the grid.

Magnussen completed the quickest lap early in Q3 to give the squad their first-ever F1 pole position during Friday’s qualifying.

By the time the practise started after being stopped by a red flag because George Russell beached his Mercedes on the gravel, the rain had intensified, making it impossible for anyone to break their previous lap record.

With Max Verstappen, Magnussen will begin Saturday’s Sprint from the front row, but Steiner has downplayed the possibility of a triumph for the Dane.

Magnussen’s goal for Sprint

Steiner cracked a joke when questioned on Sky Sports F1 if Magnussen could keep the pack behind him for the 24-lap race: “I think now you’re getting a little bit too optimistic!

“24 laps [to] keep everybody behind will be difficult, but I’m happy with points. We don’t need to win the race.

“If we win, I’m more than happy, but it would be very unrealistic to think that.

“As long as we stay in the points, we are happy.”

Schumacher’s circumstances have differed

Schumacher, a teammate of Magnussen, had a different result in qualifying; the German was slated to commence 20th overall.

Steiner thinks Schumacher’s goal should be to go ahead as much as feasible because the outcome of the Sprint will determine the grid for Sunday’s main Grand Prix.

“I think he needs to try to get as [many] positions as possible to start good on Sunday,” Steiner explained.

“There [are] more points at play on Sunday. [In qualifying] when he went out, I think he was a little bit too hesitant to put a lap down, because we just changed to dry tyres.”

In the Constructors’ Championship, Haas is presently in eighth place, one point ahead of AlphaTauri in ninth.
