Next season, George Russell will compete for Mercedes with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in an all-British lineup.
Russell, who is in his third season with Williams, will take over for Valtteri Bottas of Finland, who announced his move to Alfa Romeo on Monday.
Hamilton’s first new partner since Bottas, now 32, arrived from Williams in 2017 to replace retired 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg.
Mercedes has won the last seven drivers’ and constructors’ championships, and the team is now in first place in the team standings after 13 races, despite Hamilton’s three-point lead to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Hamilton, 36, has a two-year deal that extends from 2022 to 2023.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t absolutely buzzing. It’s a huge opportunity and one I want to grab with both hands,” Russell said.
“But I’m under no illusions as to the scale of the challenge. It’s going to be a steep learning curve.
“I’ve looked up to Lewis since I was in go-karts and the opportunity to learn from someone who has become a role model both on and off track can only benefit me as a driver, a professional, and a human being.
“For now, though, I have nine more races as a Williams driver, and I want to make sure they are the best nine of my time with the team.
“Then, and only then, can I turn my attention to 2022.”
