Several races closest to home could be eliminated from the F1 schedule shortly, with Las Vegas, Qatar, and China coming back in 2023.
Pierre Gasly has asked for Spa-Francorchamps and Monaco to be kept on the Formula One schedule for a long time, calling them as “part of the history and DNA of Formula One.”
After it was announced that an event will be hosted in Las Vegas, the two famous Grand Prix circuits, along with France’s Circuit Paul Ricard and Mexico’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, are in danger of being dropped from the calendar for 2023.
The present Concorde Agreement, which is set to expire in 2025, limits the number of Grands Prix to 24 per calendar year. Nevertheless, a lot of F1 team executives have stated that hosting 23 races is already taxing their finances.
After Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Grand Prix has been dropped from F1’s long term plans, but with Qatar, Las Vegas, and China all slated to comeback in 2023, at least one of the 4 at-risk tracks is likely to disappear.
Gasly: F1 should preserve Spa and Monaco on the schedule
Three of these four locations hold great meaning for Gasly.
“[One is] a home race, Monaco feels like a home race, and Spa is the nearest race to my hometown, so I generally get a lot of support there,” Gasly stated to RacingNews365.com.
Gasly is worried about the possibility of losing classic tracks like Spa-Francorchamps and Monaco.
“I think they are very iconic tracks; Spa and Monaco are my two favourite tracks. I think they are clearly part of the history and the DNA of Formula 1 and they deserve to be, and should be, on the calendar every year,” he continued.
“We know in F1 nowadays, there are a lot of things involved in how they plan the whole season, so we’ll see what happens, but, personally, I really hope that we can keep them over the next few years.”
