Frijns Formula E crash

Following a terrifying accident at the opening race of the latest Formula E season, Robin Frijns has given a status update on the severity of his wounds.

On Lap 1 of the Mexico City E-Prix, the Dutchman was fighting for position when he ran into the back of the car in front driven by Norman Nato.

Onboard video of the accident indicated that as Frijns’ front wheel made contact with Nato’s Nissan, his steering wheel was abruptly yanked from his hands.

While it was previously suspected that Frijns had cracked his wrist, the ABT racer has subsequently revealed that the injury really involved many hand fractures, necessitating surgery and an intensive care stay.

Frijns: The bone protruded from my hand

“I broke not only my left wrist, but also [sustained] four fractures in my hand. I was really dying of pain, “Frijns spoke to The Telegraaf, a Dutch newspaper.

“Fortunately, I am now out of intensive care and am on painkillers, but the pain has certainly not gone away. It’s a lot of suffering.

“The bone was sticking out of my hand, no fun. This is definitely the worst injury in my career. And hopefully it will stop right here.”

After having surgery, Frijns updated his fans on social media as well.

“[I] had a five hour operation as my hand was fractured in several places,” he explained.

“Will travel home soon and will start my recovery. Early days to say when I am back but I will be back soon!”

The 31-year-old gave appreciation to the Formula E medical staff, his teammates at the ABT squad, and the supporters for their encouragement.
