Denny Hamlin finds the late-race pit road penalty “irritating”

On Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, Denny Hamlin’s car was undoubtedly competitive, but pit road was once again his enemy.

On Sunday, Hamlin won Stage 2 after finishing second in Stage 1 and appeared to be in a strong position going into the last round of green-flag pit stops to contend for his 3rd victory of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season.

On Lap 160 of 200, Ross Chastain tried to overtake Christopher Bell, a colleague of Hamlin’s from Joe Gibbs Racing, but the two collided into the Turn 4 barrier and a caution was issued.

The majority of the cars, especially Hamlin’s, chose to pit, but Kevin Harvick chose to continue on the racetrack and took over in front. Hamlin would have started second since he was the first off pit road.

His No. 11 squad, though, was hit with two penalties: one was for a safety violation, and the other was for having too several crew members over the barrier during his stop. He had to begin the race over from the back of the pack.

Hamlin started in 19th place on the restart and moved up to third place at the finish line, but Harvick’s lead was too large to overtake because there were no further cautions in the race.

“It’s just frustrating,” Hamlin said. “We’ve had really fast cars throughout the year and Dover comes to mind and Pocono comes to mind and this race comes to mind and a bunch of others. Just can’t get a ‘W’ in the column.

“Hats off to Joe Gibbs Racing for giving me a car that fast and my team for setting it up really good. This is a piece of the puzzle you have to have to win races. Everyone has to do their job to the best of their ability and we just are lacking in one little section of our team that we just can’t hem up.”
