Danilo Petrucci, a two-time MotoGP race winner, has hinted that he may join Ducati in MotoAmerica after the Dakar.

Danilo Petrucci, a former MotoGP rider and current Dakar competitor, has indicated that a switch to MotoAmerica with Ducati is being seriously investigated for 2022.

Despite being out of the overall running due to a terminal electrical failure on stage two, Petrucci has been one of the standouts of the Dakar so far.

The Italian, who is competing in not only his first Dakar, but also his first rally-raid event, came in third place on stage four, which is regarded one of the most difficult of the event.

The Dakar Rally ends on January 14th, implying that a decision on his future will be made soon, and that future appears to be in the United States.

“I made the condition that I can make the final decision during the Dakar,” Petrucci said, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The team pushed me a lot because the North American market is very important for Ducati.

“The team wants to prove that it can be competitive and that it can be among the leaders of this championship.”

If Petrucci joins Ducati in MotoAmerica, it will be in the form of a full factory set-up, similar to what Loris Baz, another former MotoGP rider, had in 2021.

Bringing in a rider of Petrucci’s quality – a two-time MotoGP race winner – would be an even larger coup for the American series. The French rider, who has now returned to WorldSBK with BMW, was unable to win the title after Jake Gagne dominated throughout.

In 2022, Petrucci might be one of two prominent names to join the MotoAmerica series, as 2013 WorldSBK champion Tom Sykes is also being linked with a move to the United States.

However, with Petrucci joining Ducati, Sykes may be less likely to join him due to a top ride being snapped up.
