Chastain finishes as the runner-up for the Cup after a “heck of a drive”

Even though Ross Chastain was unable to pull off a last-lap “Hail Mary” move to earn his first NASCAR Cup Series championship, he still felt pretty good after Sunday’s championship race.

On Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, Chastain had the lowest starting position (25th) of the four candidates for the championship but had advanced to the top 10 by the beginning of Stage 2.

His No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, which was the quickest on the circuit by the finish of the race, was closing close on the leader Joey Logano in the closing laps. In the finale, Chastain came in third, 1.2 seconds after Logano.

There was little drama despite intense anticipation all week about whether Chastain or another racer would try to repeat his final lap wall-riding stunt to gain ranks at Martinsville.

“I didn’t think it would (work). I think we were going too fast here and didn’t think it would work,” Chastain said. “I thought it would at Martinsville and feel like I was very blessed and fortunate that it did. But not here.

“I think we did everything right there at the end. That was a heck of a drive by us.”
