Carlo Ancelotti replaces Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid coach

Real Madrid has recruited Carlo Ancelotti to replace Zinedine Zidane, who decided to step down last week following the team’s first trophyless season in over a decade.

Carlo Ancelotti was named coach of Real Madrid on Tuesday, succeeding Zinedine Zidane, who stepped down last week after the team’s first trophyless season in over a decade.

Ancelotti, 61, left his position as manager of Everton in the Premier League to take over at Real Madrid, where he coached for two seasons from 2013 to 2015.

Ancelotti has agreed to a three-year contract with the Spanish club, with a press conference set for Wednesday.

When Real Madrid won its 10th European title in 2014, Zidane was Ancelotti’s assistant. Ancelotti also won the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup with Madrid.

“While I have enjoyed being at Everton, I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity which I believe is the right move for me and my family at this time,” Ancelotti said in a statement on Everton’s website.

Everton appointed the Italian in December 2019, succeeding Marco Silva. Last season, the club finished 12th in the Premier League, before finishing 10th in Ancelotti’s first full season in charge.

Zidane, who led Madrid to three Champions League wins in a row from 2016 to 2018, stepped down last week, claiming he didn’t have the club’s support for a long-term project.

Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino, Xabi Alonso, and Raul Gonzalez had all been mentioned as potential replacements for Zidane.
