Audi has revealed that they will begin competing in Formula 1 in the 2026 season after months of rumours and consideration.
For the first season of a new generation of powertrains, which F1 revealed earlier this month, the German automaker stated on Friday that they will become an F1 layout power unit provider.
Audi is thought to have delayed making their entrance choice until the 2026 power unit requirements were certain.
Audi made its announcement after 2026 engine regulations were approved
Audi’s announcement that the company would compete in Formula One comes just after FIA earlier this month released the highly awaited 2026 power unit rules after the World Motor Sport Council’s approval (WMSC).
The last features of the regulations were discussed for several months with current manufacturers, potential manufacturers, and the FIA.
Four main pillars were confirmed in an update at the end of 2021: keeping the 1.6-liter V6 engine, increasing electrical output, getting rid of the MGU-H, and putting a lid on power unit costs.
Then, along with planned revisions to the sport’s aerodynamic rules, more progress was reported and other preliminary objectives announced in April of this year.
