With the growing likelihood that George Russell will replace Valtteri Bottas as Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate, many are left wondering what will happen to the Finnish driver.
Helmut Marko, a Red Bull advisor, knows the answer. Bottas has no option but to go to Williams for 2022 due to a lack of alternatives.
“Bottas doesn’t have to call us, there is no space,” Marko told F1 Insider, dismissing the possibility of the Finn racing a Red Bull.
“Actually, I can only imagine a swap with Russell.
“I think Williams will be the only option for him.”
Marko’s comments come to imply that Red Bull’s plans for next season are set in stone and that they will not be changing drivers. Given the performances of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, this should come as no surprise.
Meanwhile, Williams are resigned to losing Russell, or at least to having no say in the matter.
“We would like to keep George, but we all know that Mercedes will make the decision,” Williams team boss Jost Capito recently told Sky Deutschland.
