Valtteri Bottas had a solid performance on paper throughout Friday’s United States Grand Prix, taking second place in Free Practice 2 according to the time sheets. Bottas acknowledges that the times weren’t representative, but he is nonetheless optimistic about his chances.
After a successful day on Friday, Valtteri Bottas has set the goal of placing in the top 10 for the US Grand Prix.
The Finn came back for Free Practice 2 in a session reserved for Pirelli tyre testing after turning up his car to rookie Theo Pourchaire during Free Practice 1.
Even if he acknowledges that the times were not representative, Bottas finished the extra 90 minutes of practise in P2 and is confident about his chances.
“It’s a bit special today with the Pirelli tyre test,” Bottas told media.
“And, obviously, because I didn’t drive in the first session, that meant that I could still do a couple of runs setting up the car in the beginning, so [that was] different to the Pirelli programme.
“I completed that programme afterwards, so the lap times [were] not really representative. But actually, today overall the day felt good.”
Bottas wants to qualify for the US GP
Bottas anticipates that improvements made to his C42 over the duration of the weekend at Circuit of the Americas will help him even more.
“[It was] just one session for me, but immediately the car didn’t feel too bad, and we still didn’t have the upgrades,” the 10-time race winner said.
“We’re going to have them tomorrow, so let’s see.”
So, Bottas has his eyes set on a successful qualifying result.
“We definitely can find improvements and we still have the upgrades to the car tomorrow,” he added.
“So based on the feeling I had today, I think we definitely need to be in the top 10 here in qualifying, and I think that is realistic.”
Alfa Romeo is presently sixth in the Constructors’ rankings, while Bottas is P10 in the World Championship.
