Aston Martin provides an update on F1 legend Sebastian Vettel’s future beyond 2021

Sebastian Vettel, Germany’s four-time world champion, is yet to confirm if he would race for Aston Martin in the 2022 Formula One season.

Aston Martin has expressed their “firm intention” to have Sebastian Vettel race for the team in 2022. Vettel, 34, has a contractual option to stay with the constructors after this season, but the time limit for his decision is set to expire in the coming weeks.

This season, the German driver had a slow start with his new team, but he finished second at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in June and was also runner-up in Hungary before being disqualified for a technical infringement.

Lawrence Stroll, owner of the Aston Martin team, told the BBC: “We are delighted with Sebastian. It is our firm intention to continue with him next year and beyond.”

Stroll went on to say that he expected the four-time world champion’s future to be decided “imminently.”

Vettel won four consecutive Drivers’ Championships with Red Bull from 2010 to 2013, but if he wants to stay in F1, he will have few options other than Aston Martin.

With the announcement that George Russell will drive for Mercedes, all of the main teams’ lineups for 2022 have been finalized.

Aside from Aston Martin, the only seats that have yet to be confirmed are the second at Alfa Romeo and the two at struggling Haas.

Vettel has become increasingly involved in campaigns to promote environmental awareness of late, but Stroll was dismissive when asked if that was affecting negotiations.

He said it would have “have no bearing whatsoever on our strong and ongoing desire for him to continue to drive for us in Formula 1.”
