The intention of Alpine to only provide a one-year contract was a reason in Fernando Alonso’s choice to quit the current the team, therefore the Spaniard signed a multi-year agreement with Aston Martin beginning in 2023. Team owner Mike Krack is unconcerned about Alonso’s age impacting his future results.

Any worries that Fernando Alonso’s old age might at some point during his tenure with the squad result in a decline in results have been dismissed by Aston Martin.

Alonso has agreed to a multi-year contract and will compete for the British team starting in 2023. The French team’s intention to offer the Spaniard a one-year contract rather than a multi-year one played a role in his choice to leave Alpine, where he had first appeared prepared to stay.

The result is that Alonso, who reached 41 this year, may continue to race for Aston Martin well into his forties.

Mike Krack, the head of Aston Martin, is unconcerned by Alpine’s worries that advancing age may result in a potential loss in performance in the years to come.

“[We have] no concerns at all,” Krack told media, including RacingNews365.com.

“He’s still demonstrating today that he is still super fast, and we do not expect any drop-off.”

Krack won’t rule out long-term stay for Alonso

Aston Martin, who is presently ranked ninth in the 2022 Constructors’ Championship, has stated that one of their goals is to move up the field.

This appears to be a long-term strategy, raising concerns about whether Alonso will remain with the team if it takes five or six years until the chance to compete for victories layout and titles materialises.

Krack would not completely rule out the idea that Alonso would still be competing by then.

“I would not be surprised if this is going longer, to be honest,” Krack explained.

Alonso believes the Aston Martin team has potential

Some people were surprised by Alonso’s decision to join Aston Martin, but Krack has emphasised that the two-time World Champion is optimistic about the team’s future prospects.

“You must also consider, why did he join us?” Krack said.

“He sees the potential in this team, in what we’re doing, in how we are changing our infrastructure, [in how] we are recruiting people. So I think he sees potential here.

“For me, we’re not here to race Alpine. We [hope to] race all of them, [and] try to be the best.

“I think for Fernando also to make this change is also a big [boost in] confidence [for his] trust in us.”
