After receiving a late penalty before his home event, Fernando Alonso will begin the Spanish Grand Prix from 20th on the grid.

After Alpine decided to make a power unit replacement before the Spanish Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso will begin from the rear of the grid.
Alonso was planned to begin Sunday’s event from 17th on the grid, in front of only the 2 Williams drivers and Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin, after a horrific test session for the Spaniard.
However, his team took advantage of the chance to make a 4th power unit upgrade of the season, one more than is allowed, making Alonso the first racer to receive an engine penalty in 2022.

Latifi, Stroll and Albon move up the grid
Stroll, Albon, and Latifi will now start 17th, 18th, and 19th, respectively, in the Spanish Grand Prix.
“It’s a big price to pay here, because as we all know, it’s incredibly difficult to overtake on this track,” Alonso told the media ahead of his home race.

“Let’s see, because in the last few races, people who have started towards the back of the grid have had a well-timed Safety Car and then are inside the top 10.
“We need to hope for one of those tomorrow and maybe we get some luck and take some points.”
