Fernando Alonso is optimistic that Alpine can make up for some poor fortune so far in 2022 before one of the squads’ home races, the French Grand Prix.
As the 2022 Formula One season nears its midpoint, Fernando Alonso believes he is functioning at his peak “physically.”
The Spaniard is now ranked 10th in the World Championship with 29 points after scoring points at each of the final six races on the schedule.
Alonso anticipates one of the team’s home races at the next French Grand Prix. Alpine has also managed to catch up to McLaren as they compete for fourth in the Constructors’ rankings.
“It’s always fun to race in front of the French fans,” Alonso said ahead of the event.
“Half of the team is based in France and so it’s good to have a home race for us at Circuit Paul Ricard.”
The difficulties Circuit Paul Ricard brings
Alonso, a two-time World Champion, acknowledges that he does not have a lot of experience on the Circuit Paul Ricard, which will be back on the Formula 1 schedule in 2018 – the last season before his two-year retirement.
Alonso has seen that improving the car’s set-up is very crucial in the races he has participated in there.
“It’s a fun track and whilst I’ve raced at various French race circuits, I’ve only competed here twice before in Formula 1,” he explained.
“It’s a challenging circuit to get the car set-up right, with quite a few high-speed sections followed by various low- and medium-speed corners.
“We seemed quite competitive at various circuits this year, so hopefully we can keep this up at Paul Ricard.”
Alonso is optimistic for the rest of 2022
Alonso believes that currently, in terms of his own ability, his physical condition has been at its peak.
However, he admits that Alpine must improve their situation after having some poor luck on multiple occasions in 2022.
Alonso is certain that the club can move forward if this is accomplished.
“I feel I am physically driving better than ever!” he commented.
“Luck has been our biggest issue. It has often escaped us at crucial moments this season.
“If we can turn this around and get the luck that we deserve as a team, then I’m confident we can score big points and start to climb both Drivers’ and Constructors’ standings.”
