Alonso has joined the back-of-the-grid United States GP group

After receiving a whole set of new engine components, Alpine’s Fernando Alonso will start the United States Grand Prix from the rear.

Because Alonso’s new engine increases his power to four for the 2021 season, he will be required to start the United States Grand Prix in Austin from the back row, as he has already over the penalty-free maximum of three.

But that doesn’t mean he’ll finish last on the grid.

Because George Russell and Sebastian Vettel both received the same penalty, the three of them will start at the back, but their starting order will be determined by their qualifying results.

So, as it stands, Alonso could still ensure a P18 start.

“Fernando will have a new engine for the rest of this weekend, following the installation of a 4th power unit taking him beyond the permitted season allocation,” Alpine confirmed in a statement.

“All components of the power unit will be brand new for qualifying and the race.”

For the first time since 2018, Alonso returned to Formula One action in the United States, and it’s reasonable to say that his results at the Circuit of The Americas have been mixed.

Alonso’s only top-three finish on these grounds in Formula 1 is a P3 podium finish at the 2012 United States GP, Formula 1’s first visit to COTA.

Only three of his six subsequent visits yielded points, and his chances of finishing in the top ten at the United States Grand Prix in 2021 have been severely harmed.
