Alfa Romeo’s association with the Swiss-based squad will discontinue after they returned to Formula One in 2018, with Audi expected to collaborate with Sauber.
Alfa Romeo’s collaboration with Sauber will stop at the completion of the 2023 season.
The Italian automaker first worked with Sauber as a major sponsor in 2018, before rebranding the squad as Alfa Romeo Racing the next year.
Even though it was basically a sponsorship contract, Alfa Romeo’s road car division has benefited from some technological help thanks to a collaboration with Alfa’s parent firm Stellantis.
Audi just stated that they will enter the F1 grid as a power unit supplier beginning in 2026.
Though Audi has not stated which squad they intend to work with, they have been widely associated with Sauber, whose Hinwil headquarters are 400 kilometres distant from Audi Sport’s Neuburg facility.
Furthermore, present Audi CEO Markus Duesmann was Head of Development at Sauber from 2007 and 2009, when the Swiss business was partnered with BMW.
Alfa Romeo to evaluate future in F1
With the brand’s partnership with Sauber entering its last 18 months, Alfa Romeo says it will assess its future in Formula One.
Having hired Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas as their only new driver lineup for 2022, the firm has shown an improvement in performance thus far.
With 13 rounds remaining in the season, Alfa are now sixth in the Constructor’s Championship.
In a statement, Alfa Romeo added: “Since the economic and industrial turnaround of the brand will be achieved in 2022, Alfa Romeo will now evaluate among the many opportunities on the table, and decide which will be the best one to sustain the long term strategy and the positioning of the brand.”
