After Verstappen’s triumph, Newey was surprised: We honestly struggled in qualifying

Following a disappointing Saturday for Red Bull, Adrian Newey was unsure what to anticipate at the Mexican Grand Prix.

Red Bull’s problems in qualifying, according to Adrian Newey, meant that nothing was assured for the team heading into the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Having started on the second row of the grid, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez had a relatively easy run to the podium. Verstappen dominated on his way to his ninth victory of the season, while Perez finished third.

After qualifying, Newey admitted that he didn’t think a double podium was in the cards.

“We honestly struggled in qualifying,” Newey said. “We didn’t quite get the tyres right in Q3, so being [on the] second row, you’re never too sure.”

Newey praises Verstappen’s great start

Verstappen’s excellent start, in which he passed both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, according to Newey, was critical.

“Luckily Max had a great start,” said Newey. “He got the braking just right, and from there it was kind of like Austria, where we seemed to have better [tyre] degradation, and we were able to extend away.”

In the Drivers’ standings, Verstappen now leads Hamilton by 19 points, but Newey isn’t willing to claim Red Bull the title favourites.

He added: “You just can’t say [that], can you? It’s been nip and tuck all year. Heading into Silverstone we had a really healthy advantage, and two races later, we were completely on the back foot, so anything can change.”

In the Constructors’ standings, Red Bull is now only one point behind Mercedes.
