After an accident at COTA, Ryan Blaney’s pole was a “very fantastic surprise”

Ryan Blaney won the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Circuit of the Americas after crashing in practise earlier Saturday.

Blaney collided with the foam boundaries during practise, but his No. 12 Ford appeared to be unharmed an hour later.

He qualified for the last round of qualifying by producing the fifth-fastest time in Group A, and his average pace of 92.759 mph was enough to beat Daniel Suarez’s late run (92.741 mph).

Blaney’s second pole of the season and seventh overall comes in 2022.

“I never would have thought that,” Blaney said. “Sitting on the pole after I hit the fence. Pretty fast car, No. 1’m really proud, man.

“To sit on the pole, I wouldn’t say I’m the best road course racer. I’m always trying to find speed but it was cool to have it today in qualifying. Hopefully, it carries over until tomorrow.

“It’s a pretty good surprise after practice.”

Cole Custer came in third (92.669 mph), Tyler Reddick fourth, and Alex Bowman fifth.

Joey Logano, Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, Justin Haley, and Austin Cindric round out the starting lineup for the top ten.

Cindric spun in the penultimate round of qualifying and persevered, however he was eliminated from playoff contention for the pole position.
