After a test, Hulkenberg decided not to pursue IndyCar

Following a recent test with Arrows McLaren SP, Nico Hulkenberg appeared to be on his way to IndyCar. He has recently stated that this will not be a part of his future plans.

Nico Hulkenberg has opted out of IndyCar, less than two weeks after completing a test session with Arrows McLaren SP.

On October 25, the former Formula One driver tried out the team’s car at Barber Motorsports Park, having previously stated that he was considering a return to the series.

Hulkenberg, on the other hand, has declared that he will not pursue this.

“Quick update regarding IndyCar: It was exciting to test an IndyCar two weeks ago and I am grateful to Arrow McLaren SP for this opportunity,” Hulkenberg posted on Twitter.

“However for personal reasons I decided not to go ahead with it. Keep you posted on my future plans.”

F1 options dwindling

Hulkenberg is presently a reserve driver for the Aston Martin team, having previously appointed for Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll when they both contracted COVID-19 during the 2020 season in their prior existence as Racing Point.

However, the German has remained on the sidelines since then, and a full-time return to Formula One is unlikely at this time. Alfa Romeo has yet to confirm who will accompany Valtteri Bottas in 2022, leaving only one seat open.

If Hulkenberg decides to go to IndyCar, Aston Martin’s Otmar Szafnauer already stated that the team would have to consider its possibilities for a future reserve driver.

Meanwhile, McLaren CEO Zak Brown has high hopes for Hulkenberg in IndyCar, saying he was “right at the top of the list” for a third car at Arrows McLaren SP in 2022.

For the time being, though, it appears that Hulkenberg will not be making the switch.

Between 2010 and 2019, the 34-year-old raced for Williams, Sauber, and Renault in Formula One. He finished with a total of 521 points, but is best known for being the driver who has made the most race starts without ever finishing on the podium.
