For an L1 engine infraction, NASCAR has punished Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman’s teams.

Both teams, according to NASCAR, violated Section 20.6.1.e, which specifies that when a “long block (engine) is sealed, it must be used in the same vehicle number the next time it is used.”

That was not the case at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last weekend.

As a result, NASCAR now has the following:

  • Alan Gustafson and Greg Ives, crew chiefs, have been fined  $50,000.
  • Hendrick is out of the next points race. GM Scott, the director of engine track support, and Jeff Andrews Maxim
  • Elliott and Bowman have been docked. Each driver receives 25 points.
  • Both teams were penalized 25 vehicle owner points each.
  • Elliott’s season rankings have been lowered by one spot as a result of the points penalty. From fifth to sixth place, he drops. Joey Logano is now in sixth place. Despite the punishment, Alex Bowman is still 11th in the points standings.

In a statement released on Thursday, Hendrick Motorsports said:

“Due to an administrative error, one of our sealed engines assigned to the No. 9 car was unintentionally allocated to our No. 48 team at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Although the engine passed technical inspection and absolutely no competitive advantage was gained, we acknowledge NASCAR’s process was not followed correctly in this instance. The rules regarding the assignment of sealed engines are clear, and we understand and respect their decision to issue a penalty. We apologize for the mistake and have taken steps to ensure it will not be repeated.”

The Cup Series will not be shown on NBCSN until August 8 at Watkins Glen International.
