According to Max Verstappen, racers shouldn’t compete in Formula One if they aren’t ready for a full season of protracted confrontations with opponents.
Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, thinks that if racers are not ready for fights that last all season, it would be “better to stop” competing in Formula 1.
The Dutchman won his first championship in 2021 whilst engaged in a heated battle with Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. In 2022, he successfully defended his victory with a record-breaking 15 victories and 454 points.
Following the announcement that the Chinese Grand Prix will neither be run nor substituted because of Ferrari and Mercedes’ respective issues during ’22, the new season is expected to consist of 23 Grands Prix and six Sprint events in 2023.
Verstappen believes racers who aren’t up for the requirements of a season-long struggle should give up, with up to as six racers the most probably to be the ones vying for the championship in 2023.
The cautionary words of Verstappen
Verstappen told the media, including RacingNews365.com, that it was best to stop immediately if one was unprepared for the battles.
“We are all racers and we love racing, and of course it’s nice to have a season like I had [in 2021] but it is also nice to have a [dominant] season like I did [in 2022].
“It would be very tough if you have the year I had [in 2021] every single year, but that doesn’t really happen in Formula 1, so it should be okay.”
Charles Leclerc, who finished as Verstappen’s closest challenger in 2022, echoed the views of the racer to whom he placed second while also stating that the latest expansion of the schedule had no impact on him.
“I agree, and I think we are all prepared for longer seasons,” said the Monegasque.
“I hope it will be tight. It’s always nice to have a fight until the end [of the season], but I am prepared for more races, and hopefully for a longer fight.”
