Horner makes fun of Red Bull’s weird FIA bill

Red Bull may have won both titles in 2022, but the victory also came with an extra charge from the FIA at the finale of the season, which team manager Christian Horner has humorously confessed he was surprised by.

Given the number of points Red Bull earned in 2022, Christian Horner made light of the “huge” cost of a bill the FIA would send to Red Bull.

Having won both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, Max Verstappen and the team received their honors at the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony in Bologna on December 9.

Verstappen, Sergio Perez, and Horner were present to receive the awards, and Horner used the occasion to congratulate his racers on their successful season.

“It’s very, very special,” Horner told media at FIA .

“We broke all our own records, and these two guys have been truly amazing this year, particularly Max has had an outstanding season.

“Behind the scenes, [a lot of effort went into preparing for] the biggest regulation changes in 40 years, and the whole team in Milton Keynes rose to that challenge magnificently.”

Horner makes a joke about the FIA’s ‘unbelievable’ bill

With 17 race triumphs, two Sprint race triumphs, and 759 points overall, Red Bull finished the 2022 season.

But Horner joked that the price had caught him off guard because teams pay an entry fee that amounts to $5,770 for each World Championship point scored.

“I didn’t realise how much we had to pay the FIA for the points,” Horner joked.

“I got the bill the other day, it was incredible!”

Horner expressed his delight that Red Bull was the first team to receive the award from new FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem despite this.

If the same numbers as a year ago apply, Red Bull will have to pay a high entry fee in 2023.

The squad will have to spend $4,956,708 to compete with 759 points multiplied by $5,770 and a standard fee of more than half a million.
