When Nyck de Vries left Mercedes in 2023 to join AlphaTauri, according to Mike Elliott, Mercedes lost an important piece.

Mike Elliott thinks the Mercedes team will miss out if Nyck de Vries joins AlphaTauri for the upcoming season.
De Vries established himself at the top of the racer transfer market for 2023 after a stunning ninth-place finish on his Williams start at the Italian GP this season.
The Dutchman joined AlphaTauri to take Pierre Gasly’s spot, but Alpine and Williams were also interested parties.
De Vries’ duties as a test and backup racer for Mercedes during this season allowed the team, along with the Mercedes-powered Aston Martin and Williams teams, to take advantage of racing chances.

“I think most of my time spent with Nyck is actually stood with Toto [Wolff] chatting,” Elliott told media.
“What you get is a really nice guy, but a guy that’s very knowledgeable, who understands the sport, understands engineering and the car.
“I think for us as a team, it’s a shame to see him go somewhere else but, at the same time really pleased for him, really pleased he’s got this opportunity, because it’s nice to see a driver with the talent he’s got getting that opportunity.

De Vries is a racer with “everything you’d seek for”
The Williams squad, George Russell, and Max Verstappen are just a few of the members of the paddock who have praised De Vries for the impression he made in his F1 start.
The current Formula E winner, who won the F2 championship back in 2019, will crossover from junior categories to F1 quite late.
Elliott went on to list the qualities that made De Vries a desirable racer for the coming years.

“He just gets in the car and he gets on with it. He doesn’t make mistakes,” added Elliott.
“He quickly gets to a point where he’s getting the best out of the car. The feedback he’s giving is good. All the things you’d be looking for from a young driver.”
