The upcoming season, A.J. Allmendinger and Kaulig Racing will resume their regular NASCAR Cup Series racing.
Allmendinger, 40, will drive the No. 16 Chevrolet in the 2023 Cup season, the company confirmed on Wednesday.
In addition to making a few of Cup Series appearances, Allmendinger has been competing full-time for Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series for the past two seasons.
“Through all the ups and downs early-on, what I found right away is how much I loved the team. It was something that I’ve loved every second of it,” Allemendinger said. “I told them from Day 1, I will do whatever you want me to do to make this team successful.
“As we kept talking the future they felt the Cup program is where I needed to be and I’m all for it. It’s crazy how the last four or five years of my life has went. This is not a race team. This is a team family.
“I love everything about it and hopefully I can push its success forward. This is where I will finish my career no doubt about, in whatever capacity that is.”
“He’s been a gigantic part of what we’ve built as an organisation,” said team owner Matt Kaulig, “and he’s going to continue to do that for us.”
From 2009 through 2018, Allmendinger, a previous five-time Champ Car champion, raced exclusively in the Cup series, splitting his time between stints with teams like Richard Petty Motorsports, Team Penske, and JTG Daugherty Racing. At the Watkins Glen (New York) International, he won his maiden Cup that year.
Allmendinger was given the opportunity to compete in a limited Xfinity schedule starting in 2019 by Kaulig after a temporary break from full-time NASCAR racing. Before he began competing full-time in Xfinity in 2021, he won three races in just two seasons.
In almost two full-time Xfinity seasons, Allmendinger has earned nine additional victories and a Cup series victory for Kaulig at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in 2021.
The following year, Justin Haley will play with Allmendinger in the Cup Series. The No. 31 Chevrolet is Haley’s first ride, and he’ll be back in it next season.
