Months after Abu Dhabi 2021 did not finish with the Safety Car, he was speaking after the Italian Grand Prix did.
Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, feels that the FIA gained “confidence” after the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to complete the ’22 Italian Grand Prix in front of the Formula 1 Safety Car.
When Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren broke down on Lap 48 of 53, the race at Monza was called early because marshals were unable to remove it from the course without a crane.
As a result, the race had to finish under the Safety Car, mirroring what was predicted to happen during the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi in 2021 following Nicholas Latifi’s accident with five laps remaining.
On that specific day, despite the Safety Car being brought in at the end of Lap 57 and not Lap 58 as the rulebook required, several lapped cars were permitted to pass.
Lewis Hamilton of Wolff, driving on an old pair of Hards, and Max Verstappen, driving on new Softs, faced off in a final lap duel for the championship. Max Verstappen won.
The FIA’s conclusion, according to Wolff, was influenced by the events in Abu Dhabi, who said as much following Verstappen’s victory at the Monza race.
FIA received “confidence” from Abu Dhabi
Despite several racers believing it was acceptable to potentially complete one last racing lap, as in Abu Dhabi, Wolff was clear in his assessment that the Safety Car rules were “followed to the dot” at Monza.
Although the Mercedes chief had earlier called for the rules to be modified if that was the teams’ wish, the rulebook forbids it.
“I’m really satisfied to see that there isn’t a race director and colleagues that apply the regulations against the pressure of the media, the e fans and everybody to just be in breach of the regulations,” he explained to media including RacingNews365.com.
“So at least Abu Dhabi, in that sense, gave the FIA more robust confidence to apply the [Safety Car] regulations.”
Christian Horner and Mattia Binotto, Wolff’s counterparts at Red Bull and Ferrari, felt the race should have been resumed since it denied the spectators “a grandstand” finish.
