Harvick wins the Michigan NASCAR Cup, ending a winless streak of 65 races

Kevin Harvick won on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, ending a winless record of 65 races thanks to a timely caution during green-flag pit stops.

On Lap 160 of the 200-lap race, Christopher Bell and Ross Chastain collided, bringing out a caution. Harvick had just completed his last green-flag pit stop for tyres and fuel to make it to the finish.

Harvick and his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford remained out after all of the lead-lap cars in front of him made the decision to pit, taking over the lead.

After the compulsory resumption, Harvick made a strong move to take the lead and cruised to victory for the next 37 laps without facing any significant opposition. He crossed the finish line 2.9 seconds before Bubba Wallace.

After 65 races, Harvick won his last NASCAR Cup Series race on September 19, 2020, in Bristol, Tennessee. The winless skid was the second-longest of his profession.

With three races left in the regular season, Harvick becomes the 15th different racer to win a race this year with the triumph, advancing him to the 16-driver playoffs.

“We’ve had several good runs the last few weeks – Loudon (N.H.), Pocono where the car ran good but we didn’t have everything work out. I’m just really proud of everybody on our team,” said Harvick, who earned his 59th career win, which is 10th all-time in the Cup Series. “They’ve worked all year long trying to make these Mustangs run faster.

“My guys have done a great job to take what we have, maximize it and do the things we need to do. I’m just really proud of everyone at Stewart-Haas Racing.”

When questioned about if he or his squad had ever doubted themselves, Harvick responded, “Everyone who doubted us didn’t know us.”

In spite of a late pit road penalty, Denny Hamlin finished third, Joey Logano was fourth, and Ryan Blaney completed the top five.

The top ten was completed by Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Larson, Erik Jones, Alex Bowman, and Ty Gibbs, who was filling in for Kurt Busch for the third straight race due to an injury.
