Lewis Hamilton recently discussed how close he was to appearing in the latest Tom Cruise action movie Top Gun: Maverick.
Lewis Hamilton was unable to appear as a cameo character in Tom Cruise’s newest film, Top Gun: Maverick, due to a Formula 1 scheduling issue.
After a number of years brought on by filming problems and the COVID-19 epidemic, the sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun was finally made available to everyone in May 2022.
As Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Cruise was praised for his performance, which helped the movie gross over $1.3 billion at international box offices.
It’s now known that Hamilton would have made his Hollywood debut in the movie, barring a schedule conflict.
Hamilton almost set for fighter pilot Top Gun role
Seven-time World Champion Hamilton said to Vanity Fair in a conversation how he approached his pal Cruise, who has been a friend for many years, and requested for even a little part in the new movie.
“When I heard the second one was coming out, I was like: ‘Oh, my God, I have to ask him,'” the Mercedes driver explained.
“I said: ‘I don’t care what role it is. I’ll even sweep something, be a cleaner in the back.’
Thereafter, plans were formed with director Joseph Kosinski (with whom Hamilton is working with Brad Pitt on an F1 film) for Hamilton to make a cameo as a fighter pilot alongside Cruise and co-star Miles Teller.
Director Kosinski informed actor Danny Ramirez during the Spanish Grand Prix that Hamilton was assigned to portray his role, Lieutenant Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia, he later said. Ramirez’s revelation came after the news broke.
F1 reality stops Hamilton Top Gun cameo
However, because the movie was filmed in 2018 and 2019, the suggested times for shooting Hamilton’s segments fell during the latter’s World Championship race, which was nearing its conclusion.
“The most distressing call that I think I’ve ever had,” Hamilton recounted of having to grudgingly tell Cruise and Kosinski that he would be missing and the cameo would be cancelled.
But Hamilton has already made movie appearances.
He appeared in the 2016 film Zoolander 2, and he also provided the voices for Cars 2 and 3.
The British driver made an appearance as artist XNDA on the 2018 song Pipe by singer Christina Aguilera as part of his extracurricular activities outside of Formula 1.
