Following Mercedes’ considerably improved performance in Miami on Friday, Lewis Hamilton discussed whether the squad has made progress.

After the defending Constructors’ World Champions put in their best performance of the season thus far in practise on Friday in Miami, Lewis Hamilton dismissed Mercedes’ apparent great move forwards.

Hamilton came fourth, two tenths following teammate George Russell.

The W13 put up a strong performance, openly stating that this weekend will be spent experimenting after uncovering a few potential answers to the porpoising difficulties that have plagued them this season.

Despite a strong start to the first Miami Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton was cautious in his evaluation.

“Practice is just practice, so everyone’s doing something different,” he said.

“I don’t think everyone’s showing their true pace, but [it’s] tough out there with these temperatures.”

Hamilton: Mercedes’ porpoising has not vanished.

The bouncing down the straights was still bothering Hamilton, he continued.

“It feels similar to me,” he commented.

“I think we seem to be quicker here and, later on, they [the engineers] explained to us that we definitely have improved in some way.

“I’m not sure where that is, but we still have the bouncing. We haven’t cured it, but I think they’re just, bit by bit, improving the car.”

Despite appearing to minimize the impact of Mercedes’ set-up modifications, Hamilton acknowledged the pace he’s seeing is encouraging.

“There definitely are positive elements to take from today,” he said.

“I’m still struggling with the car, [while] George looked great out there, but we’re trying a lot of different things – we’ll converge and hopefully improve.”
