During the first practise, Horner explains difficulties to Verstappen

During Friday’s opening practise session for the Miami Grand Prix, Max Verstappen spent a long time in the Red Bull pit after his car became “a little bit hot.”

Max Verstappen’s car was sent back to the garage during first practise in Miami caused by temperature problems, according to Red Bull team chief Christian Horner.

For Friday’s inaugural session at the Miami International Autodrome, the F1 grid was met with scorching temperatures, with average temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius and racetrack temperatures in the mid-40s.

Red Bull pulled Verstappen back to the garage after some experimental laps that featured a brush with the wall, where technicians eliminated bodywork and swarmed around the rear of his RB18.

Horner, who spoke at the session, explained why the meeting was halted.

“The car was just running a little bit hot on Max’s side of the garage, so they’re just investigating why,” Horner said.

“We’ve got a bit of debris in the corner or something, so that’s why that car’s in for a bit of maintenance.”

“You can see them looking at the cooler there, so [they’re] just wanting to make sure we get the temperatures under control at this time,” Horner said, referring to broadcast images showing technical chief Paul Monaghan and design chief Adrian Newey in attendance.

“You don’t want things running hot and cooking themselves.”

What will the outcome of the Red Bull-Ferrari duel be?

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari won the first practise session by a tenth of a second over Mercedes’ George Russell, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez following.

Horner is interested to watch how the pecking order develops from here, given the unique difficulty of the Miami venue, which combines tight, twisting sectors with some lengthy straights.

“We’ve gone for the best set-up that we think… that our simulators have told us for this circuit,” Horner commented.

“Ferrari have dropped the wing level. We’ve seen in Jeddah, where we were actually quicker on the straight, but in the slower stuff, the medium speed, Ferrari were quicker, so that wing worked for them in that area.

“It’s going to be fascinating to see how the wing levels work here and whether we want to go up or down further for the next session.”
