Max Verstappen has stated that if a key member of the Red Bull team leaves, he will also leave Formula One.
Max Verstappen has stated that he wants to continue working with Gianpiero Lambiase, his Race Engineer, and that if he were to quit F1, the Dutch driver would follow him out of the sport.
Lambiase previously worked as a Race Engineer for Giancarlo Fisichella, Paul Di Resta, Vitantonio Liuzzi, and Sergio Perez before joining Red Bull as Daniil Kvyat’s engineer. Lambiase stayed on when Kvyat was dropped to Toro Rosso in favor of Verstappen to monitor the rookie’s learning and has been by Verstappen’s side ever since.
“I told him that I only want to work with him. As soon as he stops, I stop too.” Verstappen told Ziggo Sport that the two chat all the time and keep in touch 24 hours a day, seven days a week with questions and suggestions for how to improve.
“He tells me if I’m a jerk!”
Verstappen and Lambiase have joined the ranks of World Champions as a result of their great working relationship, and Verstappen explained that Lambiase is not afraid to criticize him when he is out of line.
“Yes, absolutely. It is unbelievable how we work together,” he said.
“Of course, we can be very strict with each other at some point, but I also want that. He should be able to tell me if I’m a jerk and vice versa. I have always told him that.
“In recent years, I often tried to be a bit more the engineer and he the driver!”
Helmut Marko is a fan of how Verstappen and Marko work together and communicate, according to Verstappen.
“He always likes it when he listens to my side of the conversation,” Verstappen added.
“He thinks it’s very nice to see how we communicate with each other.”
