Following the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Helmut Marko was critical of the stewards’ treatment of Max Verstappen, however he has since conceded that one of his comments was incorrect.
Helmut Marko, a Red Bull advisor, has apologized for comments he made during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix about Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen’s tussle.
The most recent clash between the title contenders occurred after Verstappen attempted to cede position to Hamilton entering Turn 27 after an illegal overtake, but Hamilton was surprised by the Dutchman’s slowing on the straight and collided into the back of him.
Later, Hamilton claimed that Verstappen had brake tested him. In a post-Grand Prix television interview, Marko expressed a different perspective, claiming that Red Bull had data to disprove Hamilton’s claim.
However, the Austrian has now taken back these remarks.
“At the time of the television interviews, I passed on exactly the information that I had received from the engineers beforehand,” Marko said.
“They were obviously not correct, so I’m sorry for that.”
Red Bull “only looking ahead”
Marko is now eager to move on from the events of Jeddah, where Verstappen finished second despite getting two penalties, while Hamilton won, and believes that Red Bull’s attentions are now focused on the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Verstappen and Hamilton will start the race on equal points, while Mercedes’ Constructors’ Championship lead over Red Bull has grown to 28 points.
“Hopefully, the unfortunate chapter of Saudi Arabia is now closed,” Marko explained. “In any case, we are only looking ahead.
“We want to win in Abu Dhabi and thus win the title. We will do everything for that, but we will not start any unfair actions.”
In terms of speed, Marko believes the team can compete with Mercedes.
“We already had the pace in Saudi Arabia to keep up with Hamilton,” the advisor said. “The track in Abu Dhabi should suit us more.”
