Max Verstappen won the Belgian Grand Prix without taking a single lap behind the safety car.
Torrential rain delayed the race at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday, and after hours of false starts and drama, half points were awarded as two laps were officially completed.
Verstappen won the first two official laps behind the safety car, more than three hours after the scheduled start, ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
The race was the shortest in Formula One history, with only two laps. Only half points were awarded because the race did not cover 75% of the distance.
Verstappen said he was pleased to cut the drivers’ championship gap to Hamilton, but he was disappointed with the day.
“It was very important to get that pole position,” he said.
“The conditions were very tricky out there.
“It’s a win but it’s not how you want to win.”
With the exception of Sergio Perez, drivers finish the race where they qualified.
Red Bull’s Perez crashed his car after getting on the kerbs at turn six on the lap to the grid 35 minutes before the scheduled start.
Perez finished last but was able to join the two official laps at the end of the day.
Daniel Ricciardo, an Australian, finished fourth, his best finish of the season.
False starts and long delays
As rain fell on the circuit, race management delayed the start four times, with the drivers doing two formation laps behind the safety car at 11:25 p.m. AEST.
After two laps, however, the cars were called to the pits, where they remained for nearly three hours.
Over the radio, Ricciardo advised his crew that abandoning the start was the “right call.”
The drivers entertained themselves in the garage while the rain continued to fall.
Thousands of fans stood in the rain in the stands, with only the medical support car’s occasional test lap around the track to divert their attention.
The drivers returned to the circuit behind the safety car at 2:17 a.m. AEST to begin a one-hour timed race.
The drivers were pulled back into the pits after two laps, indicating that the race had been classified.
The entire race weekend in Spa-Francorchamps was hampered by bad weather.
Saturday’s third qualifying session was stopped when Ricciardo’s teammate Lando Norris crashed on the fast Eau Rouge corner on his first flying lap.
