Mercedes is set to extend Valtteri Bottas’ contract through the end of the 2021 season

Valtteri Bottas is set to sign a new deal with Mercedes to continue as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate next season.

The Finn is said to have agreed to a one-year extension to his current contract, which will keep him on the team until the end of the 2021 season.

Bottas now leads the drivers’ standings after winning the first race after the Covid-19 epidemic.

Hamilton finished fourth in the Austrian Grand Prix after a penalty, lagging behind his teammate on the opening weekend.

The 35-year-old, though, turned things around this weekend, and Mercedes is now looking to sign the world champion.

Despite winning the Styrian Grand Prix on Sunday, the Briton remains only a few points behind Bottas in the current standings.

Bottas held off Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for his second successive podium finish, giving Mercedes a one-two finish.

And the team appears to be on track to continue their fruitful collaboration in the coming seasons.

Despite Sebastian Vettel’s availability, Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius is said to have given his approval for the team to keep its current pairing.

Vettel, who will depart Ferrari at the conclusion of the season, was considered an outsider to partner Hamilton in 2021 due to his friendship with Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff.

The four-time World Champion earlier stated that his departure from the Italian national team was not mutual.

The German, 33, explained how he was brutally snubbed as no new contract was ever offered to him.

Ferrari had a terrible start to the season, with both drivers well off the pace, and things only got worse on Sunday.

After crashing into one other on the opening lap, Vettel and teammate Charles Leclerc were forced to retire early.

Leclerc later apologised for his role in the calamitous race for Ferrari.
