Real Madrid wants to start next season at the Wanda Metropolitano

The Santiago Bernabéu is still under construction, and Atlético Madrid may be willing to assist its neighbors.

According to Marca, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez dined with Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo on Wednesday, and one of the topics discussed was the potential of Los Blancos playing at the Wanda Metropolitano next season.

The new Santiago Bernabéu stadium is still under construction and will not be completed in time for the start of the 2021/22 season. Last season, Real Madrid played all of their home games at Estadio Alfredo de Stefano in Valdebebas, the club’s training facility. However, with people returning to the stands, Madrid will require a stadium that can prevent them from losing matchday revenue.

Pérez does not want to miss out on the economic boost that will come with the return of between 20,000 and 30,000 fans when the new season begins in August, according to the Spanish publication.

Cerezo weighed in himself, proclaiming:

“Let nobody doubt that we would be willing to accommodate Real Madrid.”

Madrid hopes to return their freshly restored stadium in September or October, but may have to sacrifice home games at the start of next season to avoid causing too much disruption. Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be able to play as few games at the Wanda Metropolitano as possible by backloading the calendar with home games.

Madrid might be back in their home stadium after the first seven weeks of league play if the October return date is met. To begin the season, there will be two international breaks and two Champions League group games. The Spanish capital would host one of the group games.
