The news by the British racer sent shockwaves through the racing world.
On August 19, 2021, WorldSBK fans were constantly bombarded on Scott Redding, one of the series’ top riders. The British racer made the shocking news on his Instagram page that he will be switching to BMW for the 2022 season. Redding has been performing incredibly well this 2021 season, to to the surprise of many WorldSBK fans, and is presently ranked third in the season rankings.
Scott Redding has been racing with the Factory Ducati squad for the past two seasons, following a championship triumph in the British Superbike series on a Ducati Panigale V4 R. When Redding joined the team last year, he took over for Alvaro Bautista, who had left to join Honda. Given Redding’s rather unexpected choice to join Ducati’s racing team, numerous questions arose about his intentions and the state of his relationship with the Italian manufacturer.
In a comment on a WorldSBK Instagram post, Redding quickly addressed these concerns, saying: “Lots of asking why. Because there is a time and place for everything an[d] everyone. Team has been great for me but a few things were not going in the right direction. We are on great terms and still want to win until the end of the season, thank you all for the support.” Redding will ride one of BMW’s M 1000 RR racing motorcycles alongside Michael van der Mark starting next year.
Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad’s motorsport director, was quick to respond to Redding’s participation in the team, saying: “With Scott’s fighting spirit and absolute will to win, he is the perfect new addition to the team.” The entry of the British racer into the BMW factory racing team is technically a replacement for Tom Sykes. The team, on the other hand, is now in talks with Sykes about extending his contract. However, it’s possible that BMW will field three factory motorcycles next season, or that Sykes will compete alongside one of BMW’s satellite racing teams.
