Scott Redding Powers Defeats Jonathan Rea In The Inaugural Race In Navarra

Scott Redding, a Ducati rider, jumped Jonathan Rea, the championship leader and pole sitter, off the line and won the first few laps of a long battle. Rea battled with his Kawasaki’s handling and had no response for Redding’s pace in the second half of the race.

Scott Redding made his name on history by winning the first World Superbike race ever held in Navarra.

The Ducati rider got the best of a sustained battle with championship leader and pole sitter Jonathan Rea in the first few laps.

Rea began to struggle with his Kawasaki’s handling and fell behind Redding, but he was able to hold on for second, with Toprak Razgatlioglu getting third.

“It was a hot one, that was good,” Redding told Eurosport.

“I nailed the start; felt good.“I was a little bit timid, but did not panic and I caught him and picked my rhythm up.

“I was not over-racing which was good. I was quite happy with that today.”

Rea now has a seven-point lead over Razgatlioglu in the championship standings, while Redding is 38 points behind.

Redding got out to a fast start and led into the first corner, but he was passed by Rea later in the lap.

Rea looked comfortable out in front, with Redding struggling in the second half of the laps.

However, the six-time world champion began to have problems with his bike’s handling, and Redding regained the lead on lap six.

Rea had no answer for Redding’s speed and did well to keep his bike up on the 11th lap after losing balance due to a severe twitch.

“I think it was the setup of the bike a bit,” Rea said of his near miss. “I think we can make a small step tomorrow to make me more stable in that area.”

Redding powered away for his seventh overall victory and fourth of the 2020 season, nursing the bike home for the remaining 21 laps.

Razgatlioglu qualified eighth and gained four positions in the first lap.

He passed his Yamaha teammate Andrea Locatelli but was unable to pass Rea and had to settle for 3rd spot.
