Sebastian Vettel had what can only be described as a bittersweet experience in Hungary, and at the end of the race, he was exhausted. Sebastian Vettel was left bereft of genuine points and position at the end of the race after putting his strong midfield Aston Martin machine on the second step of the podium, a moment savoured thoroughly by pop opening the celebratory champagne. Between the triumphs and disappointments, there were some very amazing moments.

Tough luck for Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel, a former Ferrari driver, was only three tenths behind eventual race winner Esteban Ocon by Lap 27.

Sebastian Vettel did just that in a sport where nothing can be accomplished without pushing oneself and the car to the absolute limit, although to little avail, by relentlessly putting pressure on Ocon.

Even so, one could argue that Vettel’s hard-fought second was the best he could do in an absorbing tussle at the head of the grid. It was supposed to be Aston Martin’s second-ever podium in Formula 1, and the fact that it would have occurred thanks to a legend of the sport in Sebastian Vettel would have meant even more to everyone.

Unfortunately, that was not to be. Sebastian Vettel’s hard-won points were stolen from him after he was penalized for fuel violations after the F1 technical delegate was unable to take a sufficient fuel sample after the race. It’s one thing to place well in a race and finish in the top 10. It’s another thing entirely to have your eighteen hard-won points ripped away from you despite all of your hard work and effort.

Sebastian Vettel, who was understandably disgruntled after the race, received support from a notable figure who, at the time, was standing behind the German on the podium,  having bagged a fighting third: Lewis Hamilton.
