While Max Verstappen maintains an eight-point lead over seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton on the track, there is one location where Verstappen cannot compete with Hamilton, and that is at the bank.

According to a Forbes report released today, Hamilton leads the field in total earnings, with an estimated $62 million anticipated for 2021. With $42 million, Verstappen is in second place.

Fernando Alonso, who hasn’t won a Formula One race since 2013 and hasn’t even finished on the podium since 2014, illustrates that recent performance isn’t everything, as he comes in third on the money list with $25 million.

The list is based on a variety of sources, including “financial documents, legal filings and press leaks, as well as conversations with industry insiders and consultants,” according to Forbes. Forbes is also quick to point out that its figures do not include taxes and agent fees.

In contrast to most professional sports in the United States, where agents and even teams regularly release contract figures, Formula 1 remains a closed society in this regard, with no actual figures released. In Formula One, drivers are paid a base salary plus bonuses for victories and placing in the final standings.

According to Forbes, Lando Norris of McLaren is making the most of his bonuses. Norris is said to be driving for a base income of $3 million, with the possibility of earning extra $6 million if he finishes third in the F1 Drivers’ Championship and McLaren finishes third in the F1 Constructors’ Championship.

Sure, it’s not perfect, but who doesn’t like a F1 top-10 list?
