NASHVILLE – Chase Elliott is 2-0 against his dad
On Saturday night, the Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR driver defeated Tony Stewart, his father Bill Elliott, and an all-star field that included Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves and Marco Andretti to win the SRX (Superstar Racing Experience) season finale at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.
Chase had previously competed against Bill in a late model event in Alabama in 2013, which Chase won and Bill finished fourth in.
The final race of the six-race SRX series, which Stewart and NASCAR Hall of Fame crew chief Ray Evernham launched this year, brought 14,000 fans to the historic track, which is being considered for a future NASCAR Cup Series race. It was the highest-attended event at the speedway since the 1970s, according to organizers. The top series was last held at the aging venue, which is the second-oldest continuously operated track in the United States, in 1984.
Chase was a guest racer, along with up-and-coming NASCAR driver Hailie Deegan. Bill and Stewart, on the other hand, are full-time SRX competitors. The 12-car field also included veteran drivers Willy T. Ribbs, Paul Tracy, and Michael Waltrip.
Stewart won the season with two victories and two third-place results, in addition to his runner-up finish in Nashville.
The series, which is fashioned after the defunct International Race of Champions, focuses on short oval circuits such as Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut and Slinger Speedway in Wisconsin, and is televised live on CBS.
The summer of 2022 will be the start of a second season.
