Max Verstappen’s victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix gave him not only the Formula One world championship, but also the record for most podium finishes in a single season.

Verstappen finished the season with 18 podiums, breaking Schumacher’s previous record of 17 set in 2002 and matched by several drivers in recent years.

Schumacher won his sixth world championship with a perfect 17 podiums from 17 races (11 wins, five second places, and one third place).

With his spectacular win at the Yas Marina Circuit, Verstappen moved one ahead of Schumacher with his 18 podiums in a longer season of 22 races.

Verstappen has only finished off the podium once, in Hungary, when he was caught up in the chaos caused by Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas. A tyre blowout forced him to retire in Azerbaijan, while crashes with Lewis Hamilton forced him to withdraw in Britain and Italy.

Schumacher still has a 100% hit rate, while Verstappen’s is 81.8 percent.

Schumacher’s record had been surpassed numerous times before Verstappen moved ahead.

Sebastian Vettel won his second world title in 2011 with 17 podiums in 19 races, and Lewis Hamilton won his third title in 2015. In 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2021, Hamilton won 17 podium finishes.
