The defending NASCAR Championship winner Kyle Larson is not just thinking ahead to Sunday’s critical playoff race at Texas Motor Speedway, but also to the future of the 25-year-old race circuit.
In 1997, Jeff Burton won the first NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. The racetrack had two events scheduled each year by the year 2005.
The racetrack was repaved and rearranged in 2017. The banking in Turns 1 and 2 was decreased from 24 to 20 degrees, and the turn was enlarged from 60 to 80 feet, changing the 1.5-mile intermediate track’s profile.
The two ends of the racing circuit consequently became significantly different to drive and presented a special challenge to both teams and racers. But few would argue that the modifications improved the racing.
The problem got worse when the upper grooves were filled with PJ1 traction compound. Texas lost one of their slots in 2021 but won the All-Star Race instead. To be replaced by the newly reopened North Wilkesboro in 2023, that too will be gone after this year.
To enhance the on-track experience, there have been suggestions about providing TMS another another facelift. The model for these rumoured modifications might be Atlanta Motor Speedway, which has been transformed into a pseudo-superspeedway and now creates pack racing similarly to what we anticipate to see at Daytona and Talladega. But would racers be content with another opportunity to race with accidents and erratic results?
“I would like to see them change it from a 1.5-mile track to something shorter,” argued Kyle Larson. “I don’t know if that means bringing the backstretch in or whatever. If I could build a track, it would probably be a three-quarter mile Bristol, basically; pavement, progressive banking, all of that. But I don’t know if that’s even possible here.
“I’m not sure what they have in mind, but anything would be better than what they did.”
